We are Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots a growing program that currently serves nearly 600 of Oaxaca's poorest children. Our sole purpose is to empower the children we serve through education. By giving children the support they need to attend and succeed in school we give them a chance for a bright future that would be otherwise unattainable.
At our center we provide nutritious meals, medical care, and all the support necessary to prepare participating children as they enter public school. Since the inception of our program in 1996 we have had extraordinary success assisting children until they graduate from high school and in some cases university, giving them the means to support themselves and their families as well as participate fully in Mexican society. A number of professions are represented by those who have completed our program including nursing, medicine, teaching and engineering.
The state of Oaxaca Mexico is a fascinating tapestry of indigenous cultures making it a favored tourist destination but; Oaxaca is also one of Mexico's poorest states with many of its more than three million inhabitants living in extreme poverty. Many Oaxacan families subsist on just a few dollars a day. Rural children sleep on mats on dirt floors, lack clean drinking water and basic sanitation, and frequently become ill or die from intestinal parasites and malnutrition.
These issues coupled with the economic needs of those in the state of Oaxaca's isolated and rural regions often force children and their families to move to Oaxaca City (the capital) in search of safety and a better life. Once there, without access to basic services and education, poor children are no better off then they were in the rural areas from which they came. Survival for them and their families often depends on the youngest members of the family selling trinkets to tourists on the street. Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots seeks to break this cycle by giving participating children the opportunity to attend school and gain the skills necessary to become successfull and contributing members of Mexican society.
Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots is a 501 (c) (3) United States Charitable organization. We provide funding and assistance to our sister organization in Mexico, Centro de Esperanza Infantil. Centro de Esperanza Infantil is registered as a charity in Mexico which allows us to operate our children's center in Oaxaca in coordination with Mexican school and government officials for the maximum benefit of the children. Our permanent staff and presence in Oaxaca, augmented by regular volunteers from around the world, allows the center to continually support a growing number of children and operate six days per week.
